Chapter 17.2 : Strange

That morning, a good humoured Peng Zige allowed Su Zi to tease and embarrass him, chuckling along without any retaliation whatsoever.

Not long after the start of the morning class, the form teacher entered the class to announce some good news: “Within our city’s selection of the top ten students to represent us at the Nationals, our class took up three places.”

During the afternoon study period, the school also announced this news over the PA. At the time of the announcement, Li Erqin was at her desk studiously delving into her Physics worksheets. She was startled when she heard her name over the PA and looked up suddenly. Her first reaction was to turn and look towards Rong Si, who had coincidentally looked up at the same time.

Rong Si lightly rested his chin on the hand that was holding his pen and gave her a smile.

Her heart suddenly skipped a beat, and her thoughts became silent for awhile before she said to Rong Si, “Let’s keep doing our best. (i.e. FIGHTING!)

“You too.”

Peng Zige’s impatient voice loudly broke through their ‘strange atmosphere’. “Aren’t you two just too nauseating?!!!”

Li Erqin turned her gaze towards Peng Zige’s face.

“I hear that this time you’ll be gone for three days,” Peng Zige stated unhappily. “I’ll have to be by my lonesome self for so long.”

Su Zi turned back, “Maybe you’d like us to petition the cafeteria auntie to take extra care of you?”

Peng Zige glared at her. “Go back to your books!”

That very afternoon, Rong Si’s trio got on the school bus to meet up with the rest of the selected student representatives.  Although it was said to take three days, in actual fact it was just two days and two nights. They would return by the afternoon of the third day.

Peng Zige sprawled across the verandah outside the classroom entrance and watched as the school bus slowly drove away. Then he unhappily trudged back to his desk, took out the English worksheets that Rong Si had left for him and started writing.

This year he was unable to be on that bus, but he would work hard to catch up for next year.

Li Erqin, on the other hand, had blindly followed everyone up the bus and sat beside an equally frazzled Su Zi.  Unable to resist, she had to turn around to look at Rong Si, only to discover that he had stuck his earphones in his ears. His eyes were closed and he was leaning back in his seat, with all the appearance of having gone to sleep.

Wearing earphones to sleep, wouldn’t that be too noisy?  Li Erqin thought for awhile. Then, returning back to her seat proper, she opened her recently purchased beef jerky and asked Su Zi, “Wanna have some?”

Su Zi shook her head. “How long is the trip?”

“I don’t know.” She dug out a piece for herself and popped it in her mouth. “I heard the teacher say something about arriving there in the middle of the night.”

“That’s long….”

Li Erqin once again offered a piece of jerky. “Want some?”

“No thanks.”

Li Erqin, nonplussed, took back the beef jerky and opened up a packet of potato chips, asking, “Want some?”

“Li Erqin …when did you have the time to buy all these?”

“Before I got on the bus.”

Su Zi thought back to before and had no recollection of Li Erqin leaving the group. “So… when again and at which point in time did you go buy them?’

“Before boarding……when you were all queueing to get on.”

Su Zi, “You sure can move quick too.”

“Yup. I had already sussed out what I wanted to buy.” As she spoke, she dug out yet another packet of soured plums. “Want some?”

“……nah, no thanks.”

In truth, Li Erqin was slightly fearful of taking the bus because she suffered from motion sickness.  Buying all these snacks was her way of distracting herself. However, it wasn’t long before her motion sickness got the better of her, and she began to feel nauseated and a sense of rising panic. She carefully put all her opened snack packets together in a neat pile before curling up to sleep.

When she next awoke, the scenery outside was pitch-black.  The chartered bus was speeding along the highway, and there were the occasional flickers of light coming from the opposing traffic. The cabin was cloaked in silence. Most of the students had gone to sleep, but a scattered few were quietly playing on their phones. The glow from the screen reflected back on their faces.

Li Erqin looked beside her to see that Su Zi was also asleep. Her long lashes gently touched the tops of her cheeks, and her lovely lips were slightly parted. She really looked cute and adorable.

She felt that her nausea had receded and wasn’t as serious now. Instead, her stomach was feeling a little hungry, so she took out her unfinished snacks to munch on.

The sound of her opening her packages seemed to pierce the silence of the cabin: ‘ci la ci la’ (the rustling of plastic).

Suddenly, someone patted her shoulder.

She turned back and saw a container of milk and a bun on the back of her seat.

She climbed up on the chair and looked over at Rong Si.

Rong Si was holding out the bun and milk, quietly looking at her from the darkness of the bus cabin.

“Thanks.” She took the food across. “Have you eaten?”

“We went down for some dinner earlier.”

Li Erqin was stunned, “I don’t feel like I’ve eaten.”

“Yup.” Rong Si took out his left earpiece. “Su Zi was trying really hard to wake you up.”

Li Erqin started to blush. Thankfully the bus was dark, and Rong Si couldn’t see anything.

“I was asleep earlier.”

“I know that.”

“You…” She waved the bun and milk in her hands. “Did you buy this for me?”

Rong Si nodded his head. “We probably still have another couple of hours before we reach our destination, and I was sure you would be hungry.”

“Thank you.” She smiled.

Rong Si once again dug out something from his jacket pocket. “Motion sickness meds, take it after eating.”

“Thank you,” she could only repeat.

With a gesture of his hands, he motioned, “Hurry up and eat.”

(Minodayz: awwwwww..….he noticed those things about her! So tender and sweet!)

The next day, before the competition, Su Zi was visibly anxious. After having observed her for some time, Li Erqin took out a packet of chocolates from her bag and presented them to her. “Want some?”

Su Zi couldn’t help showing her mirth. “Ever since yesterday you’ve been constantly offering me food to eat.”

“Have something sweet, it’ll revive the brain. Then in a little while, you’ll be able to do well at the competition.”

Su Zi half believingly and half hesitantly took a piece of chocolate and bit into it. “Wow, it’s really good!”

Li Erqin started laughing and then turned and asked Rong Si, “Want some?”

“Yes, please.”

Rong Si gently broke a piece off the block of chocolate and put it in his mouth. Then he gave her one of his rare, radiant smiles.

Li Erqin couldn’t understand why her face seemed to be heating up again. Curiously, she felt her face and mumbled to herself, “How strange..….”

Next, her heart seemed to beat erratically.

This was very strange indeed………

(Minodayz: awww babydoll, RS + blushing + erratic heartbeats = ……  I like that RS is picking up all LEQ nuances and just being there for her, plus those heart stopping smiles… I could so picture it!!! Something about RS and providng LEQ with food – remember Hot milk tea, this time is Milk and bun – what’s next RS!  Just love LEQ and her snacks – Almost like a mini portable snack bar!
