Chapter 18 : Early morning

Translated by Minodayz

Far away, in another place, Peng Zige had endured three days of being by his lonesome self (endured a solitary period in the depths/ravine of loneliness). Finally, the day came when he was able to wait for the late arrival of their bus.

If humans could have tails, Peng Zige’s would have been wagging at an all-time high just then.

The very moment Li Erqin stepped off the bus, Peng Zige excitedly bounded up. “You guys are finally back!”

Li Erqin smoothly moved back, avoiding Peng Zige’s exuberant advances, and at the same time apologising to the person behind her who had given her some room. “Are you okay?”

Failing to nab Li Erqin, Peng Zige immediately shifted his attention to the person behind her. He grabbed Rong Si in a hug. “Ah Si, I’ve missed you to death!”

Stepping off the bus, Su Zi broke out in goosebumps and shot him a look of disdain.

“What’s with that look?” A dissatisfied Peng Zige made a lunge towards Su Zi. “Come, give the master a hug!”

Su Zi swiftly dodged his approach. However, Peng Zige was not quick enough to change his course and ended up hugging the girl exiting behind Su Zi.

Very soft limbs, with a rather sweet scent.

Peng Zige was so shocked, he was almost afraid to move.

(Minodayz: My puppy dog has done a boo boo….cutie! Baymax huggy moment! awwww….)

Likewise, the soft and sweetly scented female student was also stunned by Peng Zige’s sudden hug and was too afraid to move.

“How long do you plan to stay hugging like that?” asked Li Erqin.

Peng Zige slowly released the girl and awkwardly used his hands to brush his pants. “I’m so sorry.”

“It’s alright…” The voice was all softness and sweetness. The girl blushed as she moved away from the door and stood to the side with her head lowered. She stole a quick glance at Peng Zige before biting her lip and lowering her head again.

Peng Zige’s eyes sought Rong Si for help.

Rong Si didn’t notice him.

He was left with no choice then but to cast his silent plea for help in Li Erqin’s direction.

Li Erqin promptly took the hint and with great pleasure turned to the girl and said, “It’s so late already. How about we all go and have dinner together!”

Peng Zige’s entire person froze; he was like a prehistoric dinosaur egg that had been fossilized into a state of immovability. He glared with giant, googly saucer eyes that expressed [Hear ye! I wanted you to quickly dispense with the young lady, not detain and invite her to join us for dinner!]

(Minodayz: PZG… you Dino egg! lol)

In light of this awkward situation, Peng Zige was sure the girl would turn down the offer.

The blushing girl hesitated for a moment before replying, “Ok then……”

Peng Zige : “………………”

(Minodayz: Shoot PZG – I’m sure anyone who was hugged by you will want to hang out longer – awkward or not!…. lol)

Hearing the girl’s agreement, Su Zi’s brows arched up as she went over and took her arm. “My name is Su Zi. I was sitting behind you during the competition, do you remember?”

Li Erqin dug out a lollipop from her backpack and sucked on it with a happy smile, not saying anything.

Su Zi proceeded to introduce the group. “Li Erqin, Rong Si, and the one without much of a brain is Peng Zige.”

Peng Zige glared at her.

Su Zi shot back with a look of her own.

“My name is Ruan Nuonuo.” Ruan Nuonuo gently lowered her head.  As she spoke, a small hint of a blush tinted her fair face.

Peng Zige felt as if he was dissolving in Ruan Nuonuo’s gentility. The awkwardness that he felt before was dissipating by the minute, and he cast his own look of disdain at Su Zi. The side-eye he gave her screamed, “Just look here, this is what’s called a gentle lady!”

Su Zi was too lazy to respond.

Li Erqin was still smiling cheerfully and eating her lollipop as she asked Rong Si, “Are we going?”

“Let’s go.”

As far as Peng Zige was concerned, that night was a win-win, auspicious and a good day. To be able to have a meal with his best mates and eat delicious Braised Chicken Thighs for dinner – it was truly a blissful moment in time!

Infected by Peng Zige’s excitement, Li Erqin happily decided to order herself a portion of Braised Chicken Thighs instead of her usual Di San Xian (A vegetarian dish of stir-fried potato, eggplant and green peppers – a northeastern Chinese dish). Carefully holding her tray, she walked behind Peng Zige and joined him in looking for the others. Then she heard Peng Zige say, “Follow me.”

She had not even taken two steps towards him when she suddenly felt someone abruptly shuffling in front of her. Li Erqin was not prepared for this person’s sudden movement and stumbled backwards, finally gaining her footing with some difficulty. The braised chicken thighs on her tray, however, were not so lucky, and they fell to the ground with a splat.

She frantically looked at her empty tray, then at the poor innocent chicken thighs on the floor, and then up at an unhappy Peng Zige with a blushing Ruan Nuonuo by his side.

She also heard a ‘laughing’ sigh beside her.

Turning her head, her eyes collided with Rong Si’s smiling ones.

“I’ll go queue up and get you another portion,” he said.

There aren’t….”

Before she could finish her sentence, Peng Zige interrupted. He stepped forward, pulled Ruan Nuonuo into safety behind him and stormed up to a boy who was smiling cheekily. “What’s the matter with you?” (Literally: do you have some sickness? lol)

The boy was dark, tall and very lean. He seemed to only then notice Peng Zige as he replied condescendingly, “Who are you?”

“Shouldn’t you apologise after knocking someone over?” Peng Zige frowned.

The boy, miffed, lazily put his tray on the table beside him. “Are you looking for a fight?”

Peng Zige was full of righteousness as he put his own tray on the table beside him. He rolled up his sleeves in preparation.

Then, he was grabbed by someone behind him.

He looked back with displeasure, only to be met with Rong Si’s look of disapproval. Immediately, he took an obedient step back.

Without anyone noticing, Rong Si had put on his Duty Monitor badge and in a remote voice said, “Don’t cause a disturbance.”

The male student gave an indifferent laugh and winked at Ruan Nuonuo. “Made some new friends, huh? Not too bad! I’ll look for you tomorrow.”

Ruan Nuonuo, who was hiding behind Peng Zige, had a pair of wretched bright eyes that looked as if they were about to burst forth with water. When Peng Zige saw her frightened and horrified demeanor, his heart melted into a puddle. He patted her shoulders. “It’s alright! We will still be together tomorrow for our meals! Just wait for us by your classroom door, and we’ll come for you.”

The male student still wore his “devil may care” expression as he smiled. “Sure got guts!”

Five minutes later, Li Erqin was once again in the queue for the Braised Chicken Thighs when she heard someone up front say, “Darn it! There are only three chicken thighs left!”

Li Erqin was shocked after hearing this bad news. Three pieces? Looking at the queue in front of her, there were still at least ten people ahead of her.

No wonder Peng Zige had coined himself the master of the chicken thighs. It was because these braised chicken thighs were not that easy to be had.  It was all her fault for only eating Di San Xian.

Just as she was feeling all depressed and disappointed, she was presented with a portion of Braised Chicken Thighs.

She raised her head with uncertainty and saw the lean and tall male student from before giving her a wink. He still had the wicked expression of a “bad boy” as he smiled and said, “Repaying you for your chicken thigh.”

Li Erqin looked at him quizzically.

The boy changed hands holding the plate. “Here, take this! Don’t worry. I didn’t spit in it.”

Hearing this, Li Erqin took the plate without any expression and replied, “It’s alright.”

The male student: “……”

He wanted to say more, but Li Erqin had already walked off.

Immediately he chased after her until he was walking at her side. “I didn’t get to say sorry.”

Li Erqin chose to ignore him.

Not taking any offense, he continued, “My name is Ruan Mingxian. What’s yours?”

“Don’t follow me.”

“I’m not following you. I’m on my way out so we happened to be going the same way.”

At this, Li Erqin stopped and turned around. “Goodbye.”

She didn’t give Ruan Mingxian any time to reply and simply headed back the way she came from.  Ruan Mingxian could only stand where he was, flabbergasted, as he watched her purposely make a huge detour before returning to her friends.

Just as Li Erqin sat down, she heard Peng Zige ask, “Did that boy bully you too?”

“He bought me chicken thighs.” Li Erqin bit into her chicken thigh and was immediately full of praise. “Wow, this chicken thigh is really delicious!”

“Isn’t it!” Peng Zige didn’t know where this sudden feeling of pride came from. “I tried to get you to buy it before, but all you wanted was the Di San Xian.”

“Di San Xian is also very delicious.”

Peng Zige pursed his lips disapprovingly, finding no satisfaction in picking at bones. Then he remembered more important matters. “I noticed that that guy was following you; he really didn’t bully you?”

“Nope, he was on his way out.”

“Li Erqin, you are just too innocent for your own good! The exit is the other way!”

“That… that…,” Ruan Nuonuo spoke in a small voice. “Actually, he’s my older brother….”

“Cough cough cough….” Peng Zige almost coughed rice up his nose. “Why didn’t you say so earlier?”

Ruan Nuonuo was at a loss for words. She gripped her spoon tightly and gave Peng Zige an apologetic look, her tiny face gradually turning a darker shade of red.

Su Zi burst out laughing and turned to Li Erqin with her eyebrows raised. “This story here teaches us a lesson: always err on the side of caution!”

“You just quietly finish your dinner!” Peng Zige glowered at her.

“Actually, he isn’t so bad,” Ruan Nuonuo added. “He was just having a little fun messing with me…”

Ruan Nuonuo’s intention was to explain and clear the air. However, Peng Zige heard her explanation and found it a bitter pill to swallow (Literal translation: Old blood stuck in his mouth that is being neither swallowed nor spitted out).

The next morning, Li Erqin was in the public assembly area doing her cleaning duty. The weather was getting colder, and even with her gloves on, she had to stop in the middle of sweeping to blow on her hands.

While everyone was going about with their individual sweeping and tidying duties, the swishing sound of the broom on the pavement formed its own unique rhythm.

At the side, a group of rowdy boys walked past.  Shortly thereafter, one of them backpedaled and ran back. He bent over and cocked his head to the side to peer underneath the woolen hat that was hiding Li Erqin’s face. “Hey, it’s really you.”

Li Erqin looked up but had no recognition of this person.

“RUAN…….MING……..XIAN…” Ruan Mingxian dragged out his name as he introduced himself again.

With this, Li Erqin had the stirrings of a vague recollection.

Ruan Mingxian felt a tad slighted. “I’m Ruan Nuonuo’s brother.”

Li Erqin’s face lit up in recognition and, after thinking a while, she asked, “Anything the matter?”

“Nothing, just came by to say hi.”  In the early morning light, Ruan Mingxian laughed.

Li Erqin joined his laughter, “Good morning, RUAN MINGXIAN.”

“Ruan Ming Xian.” These three words rang out through the clear morning air. He felt that at that moment, when this girl had called his name, it was indescribably and exceptionally moving. He desperately wanted to hear her say his name again.

However, he looked back to see his friends waiting for him some distance away so he waved to Li Erqin. “I’ll get going now! See you later.”

Li Erqin nodded and continued sweeping.

It wasn’t long before Ruan Mingxian was running back, panting just a little.

Puzzled, she looked at him.

“Please, can you try saying my name just one more time.”

Li Erqin cupped her hands and took a deep breath, but the same flat tone came out of her mouth: “Ruan Mingxian”.

Ruan Mingxian smiled and waved at her. “This time, I’m really going!”

At noon, a certain group of people picked up Ruan Nuonuo to head to the cafeteria for lunch together. Li Erqin recalled the morning’s incident and turned to Nuonuo, who was drinking her soup. “Nuonuo, I met your brother this morning.”

Ruan Nuonuo put her spoon down and looked at her uneasily.

“He came by to say Hi and then asked if I could say his name again.” Li Erqin paused. “Is this some weird idiosyncrasy?”

Ruan Nuonuo was a little surprised. “This has never happened before…..”

Li Erqin didn’t mind at all. “Maybe he was afraid that I would forget his name again so he wanted me to say it a couple of times to really cement it in my memory?”

Peng Zige bitterly joined in the conversation. “Are you daft, Erqin! He was just dallying (toying) with you!”

The words rushed out of his mouth too fast. By the time he realized what he had said, it was too late.

Ruan Nuonuo softly rebuked, “My brother isn’t such a person. He doesn’t even speak to girls most of the time.” She gave a quick glance at Rong Si before adding, “In his year, he is rather popular and well-received.” Her voice carried a hint of pride.

Peng Zige awkwardly tried to explain, “I didn’t mean it that way…..”

“It’s alright…..”

Su Zi glared at him. “How about you eat more and talk less, hmm?!”

Peng Zige also began to feel that he had spoken a tad much, and he quietly lowered his head to eat, not opening his mouth to speak again.

Minodayz: Well now, we have 2 new characters and I have a feeling they aren’t going to just come and go like Chou Jiu.  Some new developments coming up for sure…. Feel it in my gut (well, that may be the chicken thighs I’ve been eyeing) lol – feel it in my bones!!!  – til the next chapter!

For those hungry readers who may not be familiar with the food that our foursome enjoys, here are some photos. I’m almost tempted to try cooking them!!! Lol

Hearing this, Li Erqin took the plate without any expression and replied, “It’s alright.”

The male student: “……” UHUH THAT’S LI ERQIN FOR SURE HAHA

Emm, I’m guessing Ruan Mingxian will be our female lead’s suitor…? But why do I sense something else here…. “She gave a quick glance at Rong Si before adding…” why wouldRuan Nuonuo look at Rong Si when talking about Erqin x Mingxian’s encounter..? Haha. I do hope they don’t have any underlying intention against out four friends though.

Thank you for the update! 🙂

    1. You me alike…l can’t wait to see how RMX and LEQ will connect and how that will work on RS. Honestly, I think RMX is here to stay but what role he will play is yet to Be revealed! 😉 There’s nothing like some rivalry to stir things but our characters are rather unique so not sure if they would react as expected too! 🤔😅🙄🤣

    1. Welcome aboard, 😍I love to binge read, sadly I would hate it too when I get to here and realized that I’m nowhere near the end and eager to know more and having to wait! 😬😬😅 thanks for your encouragement – the team has work well and hard and I’m pretty sure are enjoying it too!😊

    1. 😍You are most welcome…thanks for your support with MG. I agree, while my usual train of thought will be that rivalry will stir things up, but our leads are one of the kind and makes it hard to predict their pathway even with rivalry – would it really be like the expected or will we get some curve balls and curlies! 🤔🤞🙄😅 one thing I know, it won’t be boring…to me at least! 😆

    1. 😊You’re most welcome! Yes, there’s just so much life when they are together, not to mention the things that do happen when they are together! 😜 Definitely RS needs competition- I’m sure everyone is waiting fir our leads to be together by now BUT….we are still waiting 😬🤞🙄 guess we have to wait for that to happen!

      1. Just wondering, who would you choose if you were LEQ? Rong Si or PZQ? I think I would choose PZQ in real life just because he wears his emotions on his sleeves. But I cant help but be swayed by RS “cold” style but secretly so sweet! Ahh I wish I had a choice! Lol.

        1. I had friends like PZG whom I love dearly and did think I could fall for but I did go for the quiet and attentive one at the end. The one that seems as if I am the only one to light up his face… sigh oooo… lol!

  3. I bet that he’ll stir up things! He seems really interested and intrigued with EQ.. Sigh how I wish to know what was RS reaction.. The writer only refers PZ…

    1. Yes…well, I’m sure RMX will liven things up for LEQ! Aha…so you’ve picked up on that too with RS ….yes I’m thinking he may yet be slow on the uptake relational wise! 😂 Then again I believe the author is allowing PZG to make those expressive ‘sounds’ of what would be ‘usual’ reaction. He is definitely the heart of the four!
